From the government website, “Choice in Supports for Independent Living (CSIL) is a self-directed option for eligible home support clients. CSIL clients receive funds directly from their local health authority to purchase their own home support services. Clients become employers who manage all aspects of their home support, from hiring and supervising staff to overseeing how CSIL funds are spent.

Essentially, the program will give you a determined amount of money to be used every month for payroll for health care aids to care for you in your home. This also covers advertising for care and gloves for the care aids.

This is for people with a significant disability who need care and cannot afford to pay for it themselves. You have the freedom to hire health care aids who are a good fit for you and the flexibility of the hours you need!

Managing your home support and keeping track of your care (or the care of a loved one) can be enough work on its own. Every month, your employees must be paid and the taxes correctly calculated and filed with CRA. On top of that, a financial statement must be sent to the local health authority (Interior Health, Fraser Health, etc), along with receipts from the month.
